The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, has warned the Ondo state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, to call his supporters to order following recent attacks suspected to be spear headed by the latter on the former's supporters in the state capital city, Akure.
This was contained in a statement signed Friday, by the spokesperson for the PDP candidate, Gbenga Akinmoyo.
The statement partly reads:
"An otherwise peaceful Akure city centre has been experiencing attacks and assaults by known urchins of the APC against supporters and sympathisers of Eyitayo Jegede SAN, the recently elected governorship candidate of the PDP within the last 24 hours.
"In at least 5 separately reported unproved attacks, the victims whose identities have been withheld pending further police investigations, stated that,“they were attacked and assaulted simply because they were wearing Eyitayo Jedege face-mask, face-cap or T-shirts”.
"The victims include 4 males and one female whose clothes were torn from her body during the alleged malicious attacks.
"This unhealthy development is not in keeping with either the character of our candidate Mr Eyitayo Jegede SAN, nor the principles of free and fair electioneering which the PDP has exhibited throughout the whole of Ondo State during the Ward, Local Government Congresses organised so far, in which our candidate has fully participated.
"The matter is particularly disturbing as an eye-witness confirmed sighting the Governor, Arakurin Akeredolu at the scene of one of the attacks, coming so soon off the back of similar recent attacks in Owo township, which had the same hallmarks.
"It should be noted that nobody has a monopoly over violence and intimidation, our supporters also have a right of self-defence."
