The Ministry of Youth and Sports has thrown its weight behind the upcoming National Youth Council of Nigeria election billed for July 23, 2018 in Gombe.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung expressed strong commitment to the election process on Thursday when he met with the National Transition Committee comprising the Electoral Committee, the Board of Trustees and the Congress Planning Committee in his office in Abuja.

The Minister commended reports of the various committees in ensuring the election of a democratically elected congress and assured them of the full support of the Ministry.

“I am impressed by the reports submitted and it shows that we are ready for the congress. The National Transition Committee of which you are members has been given the golden opportunity to restore the dignity of the National Youth Council of Nigeria by ensuring that a democratically elected congress is held within the tenure of your office.

“Failure to hold the Congress does not mean that your tenure will continue. Your tenure expires as soon as the 6 month- transition period elapses. It means therefore, that whether a Congress is held or not, by 23 July 2018, your NTC ceases to exist. That is why we must see the responsibility to hold a congress as a golden and unique opportunity to allow the CPC, ELECO and NTC to etch their names in gold for posterity to note.

“As a beneficiary of a democratic process, I believe that this is a step in the right direction. I therefore call on all Youth Organizations to rally round the NTC, the ELECO and the CPC to ensure that come July 23, 2018, we will institute a democratically elected Congress for Nigerian Youths” Dalung said.

The Minister also reiterated the Ministry’s commitment and full support as he plans to leave a worthy legacy behind for the youths.

Earlier, the three committees gave various reports on how far they have gone in ensuring that elections are held on the terminal date for the Congress.
The NTC led by the Deputy President Comrade Chinedu Mayor Enujeko said in his remarks that the forthcoming election will correct the errors.
He pleaded with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to finance a management meeting to prepare the council for the election to avoid constitutional breaches.
The Electoral Committee Secretary Comrade Gbadebo Taofik told the other committee members that the time table for the election has been published.
“The Electoral guidelines for the
process have been made known, screening has taken place and results published.
“We are ready to conduct free, credible, fair and transparent elections.”
Gbadebo also said that the Gombe state government has approved a budget for the hosting of the congress.
In his vote of thanks, the Deputy
Secretary BOT Comrade Oscar Kalu commended the Minister for breaking the jinx that has held Nigerian youths down for a long time.
The Board of Trustees confirmed its resolve to ensure that the Congress is held on the said date and will stop at nothing to ensure that the election is not thwarted.
The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Mr Olusade Adesola promised that the Ministry will bankroll a final Management meeting to resolve all other in-house issues at a date to be announced soon
