The incidence of low performance in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination in Essay writing is not only startling, but also terrifying. The West African Examination Council (Waec) published a report in 2009. This result, of course, necessitates immediate attention on the part of those in charge of secondary education in Nigeria. In his paper delivered at the WAEC monthly seminar, Uwadiae (2009) stated that in the last five years, the proportion of failure in Essay writing has exceeded the percentage of credit level.

The major goal of this study was to identify some of the failures in secondary school English Language examinations as a consequence of poor essay writing performance in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, with the goal of proposing a remedy.
