ALL official data collecting forms in Nigeria asks the question, ''State of Origin?''. It seems, at first sight, to be a normal harmless question. But that question lies at the bottom of the division and ethnic conflicts and lack of social integration in Nigeria. It could be better when that pointless question is replaced with the more appropriate question ''State of Residence?''.
Nigerians are citizens of Nigeria and thus of Nigerian origin, but resident in a given state at a given time. The ''Origin'' question is a big problem that must, and can easily, be solved urgently.
A Nigerian who was born in Kano and educated in Kano should be accepted as a Kano resident with full social and political rights, and could become the Governor of Kano State if he wins an election for which he must be free to contest, despite his name is Vincent Enyeama. That way, everyone would regard their city or state of residence as home and seek to preserve the peace and prosperity. And Nigeria will be better for it.
The same applies to ''Local Government Area of Origin''. I was born in Benin City and lived 98 percent of my life in Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area. But it is crazy that I must indicate Esan Central Local Government Area as my Local Government of Origin, when I actually originated in Benin City. Such practice is not in line with the spirit of the much needed social integration in Nigeria - for which the Federation was at war for about 3 years.
Join this Campaign to mount pressure on the National Assembly to change that question in ALL our official documents and forms. That is the beginning of the bloodless socio-political revolution we all seek in Nigeria.
