Lagos State University(LASU), Counseling and Career Unit in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria held a one day workshop tagged "Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)" for the students of the Versity.
The workshop which was held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Master of Business Administration(MBA), International Business Hall was declared opened by the Deputy Registrar, Non-Academic Staff Establishment(NASE), Mrs A.T. Fatogun who on behalf of the Registrar, Mr Lateef Animashaun. He charged the participants to make use of the opportunity the workshop the would. afford them.
The key note address was delivered by Chief Oludayo Olabode of CIPM. While delivering his address, he praised the authorities of LASU for accepting the host programme. He pointed out that effective communication is very important to resolving disputes.
Speaking further, he advised the studentsk leaders not to always embark on protest whenever there is a problem, but explore means to dialogue with the university authorities to settle disputes.
In his paper presentation, 'Alternative dispute Resolution (ADR)', the Facilitator, Professor Akinsola Olowu, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State described ADR as a way of resolving conflicts or disputes outside the courtroom through 'mediation, negotiation, and reconciliation'.
Professor Olowu said that the ADR is widely accepted all over the world as alternative instrument of dispute settlement. He added that it is must not be used to settle criminal cases.
Admonishing the students' Leaders, Prof. Olowu said hety should always settle their differences amicably with the University authorities.
In attendance among the senior members of the staff at the workshop include Principal Assistant Registrar, Studemts' Affars, Mr S.T Yekini, Senior Assistant Registrar and Head, Counseling Unit, Mrs A. O. Oyrdiji, Dr. (Mrs) A. A. Sulaimon, Department of Education Foundation, Dr (Mrs) T. D. O. Adewuyi, Department of Psychology and other officers from the counseling unit of Students Affairs Division.
