Changing Life Style of Information Sharing

The word “communication” is a buzz word, which is as old as the existence of man.
However, the 21st century has given a new overtone to communication that goes beyond the
ability to communicate through oral language. Webstar dictionary says “Communication is a
process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of
symbols, signs, or behavior” (Webster, 1983, p. 266). However, communication is not just
exchanging information’s; it is also about the management of messages for the purpose of
creating meaning, therefore, must be a ‘giving and receiving’ of information for communication
to be complete. The three most embrace forms of communication and information gathering in
the 21st century, which is also referred as Information Century or Communication Century, are
telecommunication, media and face-face.
A predominant communication form in the 21st century is the telecommunications. Tech
target, defines telecommunication, “as the exchange of information over significant distances by
electronic means” (techtarget, 2009, para.1). Hence, telecommunications is a universal phrase
used from technologies that send information over distances, such as texting and video
conferring. It is conceivably the most popular because, it transcended the barriers of physical
space and time; this implies that it happens in real time without the physical presence of the
parties involves. It attractiveness is been enhanced by professionals who use video conferring;
which consist of a combination of voice and images to hold meetings. Clearly, reducing over
head cost to their organization and improving efficiencies. An additional, instance of the
possibilities video conferring offers is E- learning; the concept is based on instructional content
delivered over the Internet. Companies can use eLearning to train employees, customers, and
business partners. Texting sometimes called “text messaging” or “wireless messaging”, likewise
takes place in real time but only consist of written data’s. The simplest reason that can be
associated with the pursuit of telecommunications aside its advantageousness, is the illusion of
closeness of the participating parties.
However, with the quest for uninterrupted access to information on a wide range of issues
affecting humanity, and to stay in touch with a vast majority of people, the Media popularly
referred to as the mass media is sort after for information. Specifically designed to reach very
large audience such as the population of a nation state, the media communication intelligence
based on the earlier assumption is limited to one side. Since, information is passed on, leaving
the interpretation and inference to the audiences to make. The commonest forms of media are
television and radio. Although, this form of communication does not directly correlate with the
proposition that communication is the giving and taking of information, its influence is not
limited. defines radio as a “Communication of audible signals encoded in
electromagnetic waves”. The inference of this is the methodology of how the information is
shared, which is via audibility. Yet again, knowledge rush defines Television as “a
telecommunication system for broadcasting and receiving moving pictures and sound over a
distance.” (knowlegerush, 2000, phara.1 ). Of all the media distribution channels the most
influential has been the television, perhaps because of its audio and visual capabilities.
Unfortunately, because of over relies on telecommunication and the media, majority of
people, think face-to-face communication to be old fashion. Face-to-face communication is
“used to describe personal interaction in real life as opposed to via some digital or electronic
communications medium” (die net, 1997, phara 4). Some instances of face to face
communications are Meeting and Social outing. Meeting are used mostly in business situations,
while, social outings occurs within pleasurable gathering, for instance a ladies night out. The
general intension of face to face communication is usually to encourage interpersonal relations
and friendships. In spite, of society’s constant quest for fast information gathering and sharing,
the need for human togetherness will always surpass that quest, more so with globalization and
cultures intermingling, emphasis are still been placed on business associates and friends to
meet face to face.
The omnipresent of communication is such that society is going to continuously participate
in its process of gathering information. Given that we live in a society that is ever evolving, it is
understandable that communication and its form should also evolve for instance, we moved
from what I call the ‘slow and steady’ phase, which consistent of the face-face to ‘speed and
accuracy’ phase, which consistent of media and telecommunication, it will take extreme
imagination to phantom what the next trend of communication form will be. Nevertheless, the
major difference between the three forms of communication is their style and patrons, of
presenting and gathering communication. Telecommunication deals with communication as an
electronic form over a long distance within individuals, whereas media, deals with transmissions
that are disseminated widely to the public; while, face-to-face deals with personal assimilation.
However, in my opinion, there is no substitution for the human, up-close and personal
contact. Don't get me wrong, there is a place for the terrific technology tools we have today and
I use it regularly, but it's not always my first or best choice.
