What is the TOEFL test?

Top

Nearly 2400 educational institutes in the United States and Canada require TOEFL® scores from each applicant. The test is also used by institutions in other countries where English is the language of Instruction. The TOEFL tests the ability to understand North American English.
TOEFL test is administered as internet based test in Nigeria.

Who administers the TOEFL test?

Top

The TOEFL test is developed and administered by the US-based "Educational Testing Service" (ETS). This implies that ETS sets the questions, conducts the test, and sends each examinee the score report. For the conduct of the test, ETS has appointed Testing Agencies in various countries, which act as franchisee for ETS. In Nigeria, this agency is the "Prometric Testing Services Pvt Ltd".

When is the TOEFL test held?

Top

Internet based TOEFL test is held all-round-the-year. Unlike other exams, you can choose your own date and time for taking the TOEFL test! September to December is the high season for TOEFL test, so in case you intend to take the test during this period, you need to register very early to get a date of your choice. Otherwise, registering at least three days in advance is mandatory. Also, try to take the test two to three months before your score is needed so that your score gets to the institution of your choice as early as you need it. The test lasts roughly four hours.

Eligibility and Fees

Top

Anyone and everyone is eligible for taking the TOEFL test - there are no restrictions based on age or qualifications. The test scores are valid for two years, i.e., most universities accept scores up to two years old.
Important: The name on the registration form should be exactly the same as in your passport or you may not be allowed to test. It is advisable to attach the photocopy of the Passport with the application form to avoid any faulty registration.

Content and Format of the TOEFL test

Top

The test has four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
The number of questions and the time allocated to each question may vary.

Reporting the Scores

Top

ETS has the provision of reporting your TOEFL scores to a maximum of four universities of your choice, the cost of which is built into the TOEFL fee you pay. But the catch is: you have to select these four universities which will receive copies of your score report BEFORE you begin to take the test. This implies that even before taking the TOEFL test, you need to do some homework on which universities you’re finally going to apply based on the score that you expect to attain. For reporting to each additional university, you are going to pay for it.

Materials Required on the Test Day

Top

  • Confirmation letter.

The TOEFL Test has five BIG advantages :

  • MOST RESPECTED BY UNIVERSITIES: Your scores through us will help you stand out and be noticed because the TOEFL test has a reputation for quality and fairness and contains 100 percent academic content. Sending TOEFL scores to your selected institution will help you demonstrate that you are ready for academic success.
  • MOST WIDELY ACCEPTED : 7,500 institutions  in 130 countries will accept your TOEFL scores, including the top Universities in the UK, Australia, the U.S and Canada.
  • MOST ACCURATE MEASURE: Unlike other tests, the TOEFL test measures listening, reading, speaking and writing skills and demonstrates your ability to combine two or more of these skills to respond to a question. Because these are the English skills you will you will actually use in class, many universities consider the TOEFL test the most appropriate test to use when making admission decisions.
  • MOST FAIR AND UNBIASED: Speaking is measured more fairly than in any other test because responses are evaluated by three to six ETS raters, unlike other tests that rely on a single rater from a local testing site. Raters are also monitored continuously to maintain score integrity. This quality control process is why institutions trust TOEFL scores to be fair and accurate.
  • MOST TESTING LOCATIONS: You can take the test at any of the 4,500 locations including our centre in more than 165 countries worldwide.

You can go anywhere with the TOEFL scores because the TOEFL test is accepted more widely than any other English Language test at 7500 institutions in 130 countries. You are advised to research your chosen institutions’ deadlines and other tests you may need to take , plan to take the TOEFL test two to three months before your earliest application deadline, so your scores arrive at your institutions in time and try to confirm your institution requirements as soon as you can.
If you are applying for postgraduate studies, you may need to submit GRE or GMAT test scores as well as TOEFL test scores. Find out more about GRE and GMAT in GRE or GMAT column of this website.

IN ALL THESE, WE ARE HERE IN ERUDITE CONSULT TO HELP YOU GET TO THE DESTINATION OF YOUR CHOICE, EVERY STEP OF YOUR CHOICE-EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

It assesses your basic knowledge of subjects learned both inside and outside the classroom as well as how you think, solve problems and communicate. The SAT is offered at least seven times a year in the United States and U.S territories, and six times a year internationally, including Nigeria . WHAT IS GRE?

he Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States,in other English-speaking countries and for English-taught graduate and business programs world-wide. Created and administered by Educational Testing Service (or ETS) in 1949,the exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based, computer adaptive exam administered by selected qualified testing centers; however, paper-based exams are offered in areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available.
In the graduate school admissions process, the level of emphasis that is placed upon GRE scores varies widely between schools and between departments within schools. The importance of a GRE score can range from being a mere admission formality to an important selection factor.

Structure
The exam consists of four sections. The first section is a writing section, while the other three are multiple-choice style. One of the multiple choice style exams will test verbal skills, another will test quantitative skills and a third exam will be an experimental section that is not included in the reported score. The entire test procedure takes about 4 hours.[6]

Verbal section
The verbal section consists of analogies, completions, and reading comprehension passages. Multiple-choice response sections are graded on a scale of 130-170. This section primarily tests vocabulary, and average scores in this section are substantially lower than those in the quantitative section. In a typical examination, this section may consist of 30 questions, and 30 minutes may be allotted for it.

Quantitative section
The quantitative section, the other multiple-choice section, consists of problem solving and quantitative comparison questions that test high-school level mathematics. Multiple-choice response sections are graded on a scale of 130-170. In a typical examination, this section may consist of 28 questions, and test takers may be given 45 minutes to complete the section. This section typically includes 14 quantitative comparison questions, 10 discrete quantitative questions (multiple-choice) and 4 data interpretation questions.

Analytical writing section
The analytical writing section consists of two different essays, an "issue task" and an "argument task". The writing section is graded on a scale of 0-6, in half-point increments. The essays are written on a computer using a word processing program specifically designed by ETS. The program allows only basic computer functions and does not contain a spell-checker or other advanced features. Each essay is scored by at least two readers on a six-point holistic scale. If the two scores are within one point, the average of the scores is taken. If the two scores differ by more than a point, a third reader examines the response.

Issue task
The test taker will be able to choose between two topics upon which to write an essay. The time allowed for this essay is 45 minutes. Issue topics are selected from a pool of questions.

Argument task
The test taker will be given an "argument" and will be asked to write an essay that critiques the argument. Test takers are asked to consider the argument's logic and to make suggestions about how to improve the logic of the argument. The time allotted for this essay is 30 minutes. Arguments are selected from a pool of topics.

Experimental section
The experimental section, which can be either a verbal, quantitative, or analytical writing task, contains new questions that ETS is considering for future use. Although the experimental section does not count toward the test-taker's score, it is unidentified and appears identical to the real (scored) part of the test. As test takers have no clear way of knowing which section is experimental, they are forced to complete this section. This section does not appear on all GRE examinations. Furthermore, an identified and unscored section of such experimental questions, asked for research purposes, can appear at the end of the test
