Our economy

Dr Ngozi's advice to our president to remove subsidy on PMS which he did on the first day of this year received wide disapprobation. However, it is as a result of this bold step even against all odds that the truth seems to be coming out. With the attacks and counter-attacks from those summoned by our legislators, there is no denying the fact that although the subsidy removal was wrongly time, there is hope. Assuredly, it was this subterfuge that madam saw that made her advise mr president in…See More

Be yourself

Okonjo iweala's failure no doubt must have raised a lot of questions that need to be answered. It is obvious that the world giant whose steps we are following don't even practise what they preach. Why did Ngozi fail? Some ask. To her, she lost because the selection wasn't based on merit; what an inanity. Yes USA is one of the banks' major donor but does that necessarily mean that they have to chair the bank notwithstanding the qualities possessed by their candidate compared to others? USA chair…See More

cashless society

Cashless society to a layman is simply a society that don't use cash. There is however more to it as it involves a reduction in cash usage substituted by an increase in the use of cards for transaction purposes. This society is seen by many as the ideal society, by few as a mere change in the financial structure of a society while some see it as inanity. As sterling as the society seems, we (Nigerians) are not yet ripe for it. The premises from which i drew my conclusion are: the prevalence of…See More

The dismal science department

Sometimes, I just ponder and wonder why I am an economist. Some other times, i wonder why people now like the field. Economics is now a field of study which everyone wants to venture in; some in BSc and others in MSc. In those days people saw us as misers and stingy people just like teachers, but this days things have changed although, some people still scoup from the soup of ignorance. To me anyway, economics is just a field of study which, based on certain assumptions (which are most times…See More

deregulation

NEW YEAR GIFTThe deregulation of the downstream sector of oil ( PMS ) by GEJ has been perceived by many as the greatest new year gift. Although it came abruptly, there is no denying the fact that it is the best thing that has ever happened in Nigeria. In my previous work on deregulation, its effects was categorized into two. Obviously we are experiencing the short run effects which is the period when we pay the price for what we will enjoy in the future. The first of course is the increase in…See More

#5000 note. Perhaps we need to consider the inflationary tendency of this policy. Nothing increases by a naira or 2 again in Nigeria.
We mosty experience #20 or more increment in price. Even the discount houses that claim to
accept coins hardly issue it when you have coins balance with them. For crying out loud, where was he when Soludo tried removing zeros from our currency? Look at
Ghanaian economy. Besides inflation, one can now carry a
hundred thousand naira about.
Was he not the one that introduced cashless society? What is the point of connect? What are
the implications on our banks? Why must he use error and trial
method in our economy? If i do this, this might happen. Yes!yes! Let me try it. Dekko the crisis in
our banking sector with workers being laid off on a daily basis. Countries that once introduced
high currencies are trying to wipe them out while the reverse is the case here. What has higher denomination got to do witi the contemporary problems in our
economy. I am very sure that he is aware that Nigerians detest coins. Why producing something that nobody will consume? Where are
the #1 and #2 coins introduced? Now he wants to introduce
higher coins-meaning nothing will sell for #5 or #10 again.
Perhaps he need to study Zimbabwe.

AMAKOHIA-UBI SECONDARY SCHOOL
Amakohia-ubi secondary school is a government school in owerri west local government area in Imo state. It is situated few steps away from the community's Eze compound. There are only four permanent teachers (Amaka, 2011), a handful of student teachers and few corpers in this school. The school building is situated at the center of the school complex surrounded by grasses and light forest which aid unholy acts. It is sadonic that there is no laboratory in this school. About 95% of the students in this school have never seen a library as they have non while over 99% of them are computer illiterate in this computer age-what an irony. Lateness, examination malpractice, fighting, boycotting of classes, cultism as represented by the existence of small violent groups etc is the norm in this school. My first real encounter with this school was in 2007 when i wrote an unpublished report on "the spiral of examination malpractice in Nigeria".
There is no argument of the fact that there is a high correlation between the number of (quality) teachers and students perfomance academically and otherwise with adequate teachers Granger causing better students performance without feedback. In a personal interview with some student teachers in the school who prefer being unanimous, it was found that there few permanent teachers in this school because of high transportation cost (for those living in owerri town), lack of incentives and perhaps the existence of ghost workers in the school. Expectedly, there are few students in this school who can correctly spell their names and make simple (not compound or complex) sentences. On the average, they are interested in cutting grasses and playing football. When it seems a solution was near, few days ago the community Eze visited the school and promised to buy a football for the male students-WHAT A DONATION. Ever since he made this donation I wake up every morning asking myself the following questions: is football more important than a laboratory or library or even a computer system? What is the correlation between football and quality education considering the students low IQ problem? Is Amakohia-Ubi secondary school not in the list of government schools in Imo state? What is the hope of of this children and many more to come?
Amakohia-Ubi secondary school is paradoxically a citadel of learning in Imo state.
