When, last week, the  Governors’ Forum, led by Governor Bukola Saraki, came out to support Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to be Acting President, not many realised how they arrived at the decision from their previous position.

Investigation has revealed that the decision was as a result of three-hour meeting held at the instance of Mr. Dimeji Bankole, the Speaker of the House of Representa-tives, with five governors led by Governor Saraki.

Bankole had informed the governors, from different zones of the country, of the House of Representatives willingness to obey the Justice Abutu decision for Vice-President to perform all function of the President in acting capacity.

He told the governors that there was need for them to support this position to resolve the constitutional logjam looming in the country.

Sources at the meeting said Bankole informed them that he was willing to receive all communications from the Vice-President as Acting President and head of the executive on the basis of Section 5 of the Constitu-tion. He added that it was the Senate that was insisting on not receiving communica-tions from the Vice-President based on the court ruling. The Senate position was that the President transmit a letter based on Section 145.

After the three-hour meeting, the governors headed straight to the Presidential Villa for a surprise meeting with Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan where they expressed support for him to perform all the functions of the President in acting capacity, based on judicial interpretations.
