The Deputy speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Rt. Hon. Aja Chioma Ibiam congratulates His Excellency, President Mohammed Buhari, GCFR , his Executives ,the Legislature, the Judiciary and all Nigerians at home and abroad on this great day marking the celebration of Nigeria's Democracy.
While addressing a gathering of youths, she reminded them of the importance of our democracy and the need to help uphold true democratic principles not just as leaders but also as followers. She also commended His Excellency, the President for going back to our history and having the democracy day celebration today as against the previously celebrated day.
She emphasized the importance of individual efforts geared towards a better Nigeria. Rt. Hon. Aja also admonished the Federal and state governments to pay more attention to the development of the female gender in line with contemporary international practices and the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
The deputy speaker highlited the need for women to be free from all forms of sexual harassment and discrimination ,in line with gender equality. She raised concern over the multiple ritual murder incidences targeted at women recorded in the previous years and the alleged police brutality and harassment of women in various parts of the country including the Federal capital territory.
While commending the military and paramilitary for the good effort they have put in so far in ensuring order in the society and preserving our democracy in the last 20 years; she encouraged them to do better and adopt improved disciplinary measures to fish out the bad eggs and restore sanity in the force.
Finally she encouraged Youths to have a reflective attitude towards democracy and take a resolve to shorn all forms of violence and uphold love for the nation.
